Overnight trading: hours and which brokers offer it

Overnight trading is the session between after-hours and pre-market: 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM Eastern, Sunday night through Friday morning. Several large US brokers now offer it for stocks and ETFs, futures trade nearly around the clock anyway, and crypto never stops.

What is overnight trading?

The regular US stock session ends at 4:00 PM ET and after-hours trading stops at 8:00 PM ET. Overnight trading fills the gap until pre-market opens at 4:00 AM ET. Orders are matched on an alternative trading system rather than on the NYSE or Nasdaq, brokers accept limit orders only, and the list of tradable names is a subset of US-listed stocks and ETFs, usually the largest and most liquid ones.

What can you trade overnight?

• Stocks and ETFs: a broker-specific list, limit orders only, often 1,000 or more names at the larger brokers.
• Futures: S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, gold, oil and Treasury futures trade almost 24 hours a day on weekdays.
• Forex: 24 hours a day from Sunday 5:00 PM to Friday 5:00 PM ET.
• Crypto: 24 hours a day, every day, including weekends.

Risks of overnight trading

Volume is a fraction of the regular session, so spreads are wider and a single order can move the price. News released after the close can gap prices sharply, and the 4:00 AM and 9:30 AM opens can bring another gap when the wider market reacts. Market orders are not accepted, halts still apply, and fills are not guaranteed. Overnight prices are useful as a signal of where a stock will open, but they are not the official close.

Do overnight prices predict the open?

They are a useful signal, especially after earnings or big news, but the 9:30 AM open brings far more volume and can move the price again.
