About the S&P 500
The S&P 500 is the most-watched U.S. stock-market index, tracking 500 of the largest publicly traded American companies weighted by market capitalization. It is widely used as the benchmark for the overall U.S. equity market and as the basis for trillions of dollars of index funds.
The official index is only calculated while the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are open: weekdays from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern, minus holidays. Outside those hours the published value freezes.
